Survivorship Gynecology Q & A

What is survivorship gynecology?

Survivorship gynecology is aimed at restoring and maintaining sexual health and intimacy after cancer or a bad illness.

The advancements in medicine over the past 50 years allow people to live longer with chronic diseases. In 1970, there were approximately three million cancer survivors in the United States. As of 2016, there were more than 15 million cancer survivors, and this number is expected to increase.

Cancer treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation, can affect women’s sexual health and cause vaginal dryness and discomfort. Dr. Pam understands a chronic disease affects how you feel and the impact it may have on libido and intimacy.

To fill the void, she offers survivorship gynecology to educate patients about these effects and provides therapeutic counseling and medical treatment as needed to improve intimacy and sexual health.

What can I expect during survivorship gynecology counseling?

During survivorship gynecology counseling, Dr. Pam works with you to understand your health condition and how it might be affecting your relationship. She then works with you to develop a treatment plan. Her goal with counseling and treatment is to improve your happiness and bring you back to where you were.

Depending on your needs, survivorship gynecology may include:

  • Preoperative counseling for breast, cervical, uterine, prostate, or urologic cancers
  • Management of cancer treatment side effects
  • Discussion about cancer, chronic disease, and libido
  • Changing caregiver roles and the effect on intimacy

Dr. Pam also offers individualized counseling to cancer patients to offer support and assistance as they go through treatment.

Is my partner involved in survivorship gynecology?

Dr. Pam offers specialized counseling to your partner as needed. This might include individual or combined counseling. Dr. Pam wants to improve the communication between you and your partner to help bring the romance and intimacy back to your relationship.

She also offers specialized counseling for specific needs, such as caregiver roles, and how it changes the dynamics of the relationship. Support and coping mechanisms for your partner providing the caregiving are available as well.
